Rachel Herring McCord
Hi! I'm Rachel Herring McCord: color-lover, design enthusiast, and all-around creative.
SPAWNED IN 2010
Spawned in 2010, Herring Design Co. was initially started for the creation of small print pieces, like invitations and stationery. Knowing she wanted to have a creative career, Rachel took the leap of faith in 2012, leaving an ad agency job to pursue Herring Design Co. full time.
Rachel has been designing and creating for as long as she can remember. When she was little, she was never without a crayon or marker in her hand. Rachel took all the art classes she could growing up, and continued by creating t-shirts and set designs for dances in high school. Knowing she wanted to major in a design field, Rachel graduated with a degree in Interior Design and another in Business Administration from Auburn University. While in college, she learned Adobe Creative Suite, and it ignited a love of graphic design.
After college, Rachel moved to Birmingham, AL. Still having a major interest in graphic design, she started Herring Design Co. designing custom invitations for people. The business grew by word of mouth, and so did the products she offered. Mixing a love of working with her hands plus a dash of ADHD, Rachel set her mind to having a career as a multidisciplinary artist, creating pieces in a multitude of mediums. In addition to being accepted to many prestigious art shows, she proudly had her work sold in several stores, including West Elm.
After seven years in Birmingham, AL, Rachel moved to Santa Rosa Beach, FL. The opportunity to fill a graphic design position arose, and it satisfied a desire Rachel had had for years. Although the offerings from Herring Design Co. has changed throughout the years, Rachel is proud to continue to create and design almost everyday.
In 2017, the nation's first Underwater Museum of Art was created and submissions were being accepted. Again with the love of working with her hands, Rachel had gotten her dad to give her welding lessons many years prior. With his resources, she knew she could create something for the museum. After coming up with a concept, Rachel was one of the seven artists chosen for her sculpture design, The Grayt Pineapple, an 8ft stainless steel pineapple. In 2018, it was placed off the coast of Grayton Beach, FL. In 2019, she was accepted again with her creation Let's Flamingle, a concrete and stainless steel sculpture.
In 2021, Rachel's sculpture "The Golden Flight" was accepted and placed on public display on the Monarch Art Trail as her first public "above sea-level" piece. The stainless steel sculpture features 10 spirals based off the Golden Spiral created from the Golden Ratio, a mathematical equation that occurs in nature. The shape can be interpreted by the viewer as wings, waves, shells, and more.
Outside of art + design work, Rachel obsessively follows SEC football, loves a cold beer on the porch, and is always on the search to find mid-century modern treasures while thrifting. She lives with her husband Richard, and their two kids, Ray and Ruby. If it's fall, you can find Rachel in Auburn cheering on her Tigers. Any other time, she's wrangling kids, buying plants from the dying plant section at Lowe's, or working on DIY house projects.
